Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens which is normally clear. This forms when proteins and fibers within the lens break-down and clump together, causing a clouding effect on the lens that results in decreased vision quality. Cataracts progressively develop over a period of time and most commonly occur due to aging, but also may occur due to eye injury , following surgical treatment for other eye conditions congenital ( present from birth), long standing use of steroid medication and excessive radiation exposure.

In the early stages of development, patients are often unaware they have cataracts until symptoms start to affect vision. These Symptoms may include blurriness at both distance and near vision , faded colors, sometimes double vision, halos around light, trouble with bright light and seeing at night. The only treatment available for cataracts is surgery, where the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens implant. This Implant is known as an intraocular Lens (IOL) and is fixed inside the eye and just like the natural lens, it functions to focus light rays onto the retina. In addition to restoring vision that has been lost due to cataracts, IOL implants can offer vision correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia, reducing or completely eliminating the need for glasses postoperatively. A wide range of intraocular lens Implants are available to patients, each offering different effective solutions for their specific vision correction needs. These options include

  • Mono-focal Intraocular lens implants which as the name suggests, correct only one range of focus; often distance vision, with the patient requiring near vision glasses for activities like reading and close-up work.
  • Toric Intraocular lens implants which are Astigmatism correcting IOLs
  • Multifocal Intraocular Lens implants which offer multiple range of focus to correct visual disorders at the near, intermediate and far vision, helping patients reduce/eliminate dependence on glasses for both distance and reading vision

It is important for the surgery to be performed by an experienced surgeon to avoid complications. There are different methods of doing cataract surgery and also different types of intraocular lenses as indicated above.

At Eagle Eye Laser Centre we have very experienced surgeons using the most modern methods of cataract surgery and providing advanced intraocular lenses including the best multifocal intraocular lenses.
