Corneal Crosslinking (CXL)

Crosslinking is a surgery that combines the use of riboflavin eye drops and eye ultra-violet light from a special machine to strengthen the structure of the cornea. The goal is to keep the cornea from bulging further and thus arrest the progression of keratoconus. It may help avoid a corneal transplant. Corneal cross-linking is an outpatient procedure that takes about 45 minutes per eye, performed at our center as a day surgery.
Recovery time after a CXL procedure ranges between 2-4 weeks and postoperative follow-up is lengthy, primarily to monitor the stability of keratoconus; In rare cases, retreatment of CXL may be required if progression is evident.

NB: The aim of this procedure is to solely arrest keratoconus progression and not vision correction.
