Eye Allergies

Eye allergies also called Allergic Conjunctivitis occur when the eyes are exposed to substances (allergens) in the environment such as pollen, dust, and fumes leading to an inflammatory reaction of the surface of the eye. It is a common condition but more prevalent in children. Symptoms may vary from mild to severe and include; itchy eyes, burning or stinging sensation, tearing, redness, discoloration of the eyes, puffiness of eyelids, discharge, sensitivity to light, and feeling like there are particles in the eyes.

One of the dangers of severe inadequately managed allergy is the development of keratoconus, leading to a progressive decrease in vision. It can also lead to permanent discoloration of the eyes. There's no known cure for allergies, but treatment can help relieve symptoms and prevent complications. The main approach to treatment is the identification and avoidance of triggers (allergens). Lubricating and antihistamine eye drops are effective in most mild cases, whereas severe cases may need stronger medication prescribed only by an ophthalmologist. Special lenses to relieve light sensitivity may help too. Make your appointment at Eagle eye today for more improved quality vision and life.
