Refractive Errors

Refractive errors are common eye disorders that occur when the eye cannot clearly focus images. This is as a result of the inability of the eye to bend light correctly, resulting in a blurred image. Uncorrected refractive errors decrease vision-related quality of life and increase difficulty in performing daily tasks; this makes it necessary for immediate examination by an eye specialist for appropriate management.

The main types of refractive errors are myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia (loss of near vision with age), and astigmatism

Myopia (Short-sightedness)

Individuals who suffer from myopia have difficulties focusing on far objects.

Usually beginning in late childhood and teenagehood, the individual will experience notable vision strain, squinting, and in children, trouble reading black/whiteboards at school. Eye screening is important especially in children for early detection.

Hyperopia(long-sightedness)

People who suffer from hyperopia have difficulties focusing on both far and near objects, however, the strain is worse for near objects. As such, they strain and are likely to suffer from frequent headaches and general eye discomfort after doing close tasks such as reading, writing, or computer activities

Usually, hyperopia will start in early childhood, and therefore eye screening for children is important.

Astigmastism

Astigmatism occurs when the curvature of the cornea (front part of the eye) is uneven, altering the way light enters the eye. This causes blurry, fuzzy, or distorted vision at all distances. Astigmatism can occur in combination with myopia or hyperopia and can start at any age.

People who suffer from astigmatism have difficulties in focusing, observable by excessive squinting, frequent headaches, and eye strain.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a natural, age-related gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus when reading Onset is usually from early to mid-forties and continues to worsen with years.

People with presbyopia experience blurry vision when carrying out near tasks such as reading or threading a needle forcing them to adjust tasks to arm’s length. If not managed, presbyopia can lead to a dislike for reading and abandonment of reading as a hobby.

All refractive errors can be managed with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. Please make an appointment at Eagle Eye Laser Centre today for an assessment.
